This oribatide (Phthiracaroidea) was found
in the soil from a forest on the edge of the Swabian Alb. Beetle mites, also
called moss mites, play a significant role in the formation of humus, as they
feed on plant debris, fungal hyphae, algae, pollen etc. For protection against
predators, these mites are armored with chitin, in which they can encapsulate completely.
